The Beautiful Smile

Ly riding home

Ly, who is in grade 7 in Yersin Middle School, in the province of Khanh Hoa, Vietnam- said that she has been dreaming of having a bike of her own, but her poor living conditions always stopped her dream from becoming real. So today at the bike giving, she asked her mother to ride her on their family’s only old motorbike to the government office to receive the new bike in the early morning. When we came at 8:15 in the morning, she said she had been waiting for 1 hour 30 minutes just because of her excitement.

Ly was born into a family of 3 children- she is 13 years old, one sister is 12 and another brother is 6. She is in the ethnic minority group called the Raglai, living in the village of Suoi Cat, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam. Her parents do farming in the mountains 10 km from their house during the week; thus the three kids have to stay on their own and go to school on their own. They don’t have any bikes for the three so they either walk to school, which takes about 20-30 minutes one way, or ask for a ride from their friends.

The principal of Ly’s school, who was also present at the bike giving, said that she has been one of the best students at school, and that her parents are so aware of the importance of education for their children that they work very hard to keep them in school. The parents want their children to have a better life, not as difficult as their own lives have been.

At the bike giving, when Ly was asked if we could take her picture, she kept smiling, so brightly and so happily. And she still kept that beautiful smile on her ride home from the bike giving. It is a beautiful thing to see the girls traveling on their new bikes in the scenery of the green banana trees along the village road.

Thanks to all of you, there are many happy girls with new bicycles and stories like Ly's to tell.
