Bikes for Girls Update

By Sara | Founder

Over the past six years we’ve watched hundreds of girls take their first ride on their brand new bicycles. We sometimes forget how it felt to get our first bike and how magical and life changing it was at a young age. What was it like to get your first bike? How did it feel the first time you put your hands around the grips and grabbed the handlebars? I can still remember how it felt with the first couple of rotations of the pedals and the world that I knew up until that point, quite literally flew behind me.

From the youngest age, there is a sense of freedom that comes when you’re on a bike, and with that, a true feeling of joy. The impact a bike has on the feeling of independence at a young age, is something that most all of us have felt. For girls living in rural areas of Vietnam a bicycle helps them be more self-sufficient and the burden of walking back and forth to school is lessened. Having a bike also means you’re able to keep up, not just for school, but with friends. I went everywhere on my bike and I had a lot of fun growing up with kids having bike races, going on adventures, experiencing and enjoying adolescence together. If I hadn’t had a bike, my childhood would have been different. This is the same for all of the girls in Vietnam who we have given a bike to.Your support throughout the years has improved the lives of not only many young girls, but their families and communities as well.

We want to thank you for voting and donating to help us try and win the GlobalGiving Girl Fund competition back in March, and although we didn’t win this year, you helped us raise enough to purchase over 100 bicycles!

Schools have reopened in Vietnam after a three month stay-at-home order. We will be giving out bikes this month again, but following social distancing guidelines and limiting our bike givings to 10 girls at a time instead of 20. Because of you, close to 2000 Vietnamese girls have now received their very first bike.

We hope that you all are safe and making your way through all of the changes that have occurred in the world over the last few months.

Thank you again,

Sara
