Despite the fear of the coronavirus, people in rural Nepal have been living almost a normal life for the last few months. But as the virus started to spread faster again in India, Nepalese people are now alarmed, especially along the border side. We will have to take extra caution to avoid contamination because the border is only a few kilometres away and it is not well managed.

As life was normal in the last few months, we have achieved a lot. All our girls in the scheme restarted their schooling, the girls are in the higher secondary schooling taken their exams and they have the results as well. Sixty-two of the girls have received private tuition classes in the last few months and thirty-five are still receiving them. We also took three more new girls in the scheme that we supposed to take before the lockdown. In total, we spent £680 to provide the private tuition classes in this quarter.

The six girls who were in the final year of higher secondary schooling took the final exam and five of them passed all the subjects. Renu is the sixth girls who failed in one subject and she will have to re-take the subject’s exam in the coming year. Similarly, the five girls in the 1st year of higher secondary schooling also took their exam and two of them passed all the subjects and three failed one subject each. The three girls will also have to re-take the exam.

Even though failing a subject or two is not good on their performance certificate, it is not the end of the world. Pupils with a poorer educational background do fail and they get a couple of times the opportunity to re-take the exam. Plus, this year the corona pandemic caused significant inconvenience in their schooling so I am not surprised.

Regardless of all the challenges, we provided sufficient study support materials to every girl in the scheme. In the quarter, we provided 76 school bags, 1280 notebooks, 490 pens, 25 calculators and 25 geometry toolbox. The school attendance of the girls is also satisfactory in the quarter.

Finally, as this curriculum year coming towards the end, the girls in basic and secondary schooling will have to take the final exam. So, we are currently busy in the preparation.

We wish a very happy Holi (the festival of colour) to everyone around the globe. May this Holi brings many colourful moments to everyone’s life.
