Centering Girls' Potential

By Amanda Hall | Development and Partnerships Coordinator

Dear Friends,

You may have noticed that the name of our project has changed from “Educate, Empower, and Engage Teen Girls in Honduras” to “Support Girls Leading Change in Honduras”. This doesn’t mark a change in our work, but rather how we frame and share that work with you. Instead of focusing on what we do, we want to center girls' potential and what they are capable of being and achieving. When girls have access to education and empowering opportunities, they are equipped with critical skills and tools to transform their lives, families, and communities.

So much has happened since our last update—so let's dive in!

Last year, 12 young women scholarship students graduated from high school and 3 graduated from university—two with bachelor's degrees in civil engineering and psychology and one with an associate's degree in graphic design. Graduations and the end of one school year open up opportunities for new scholarship students in the year ahead. After reviewing applications and conducting interviews and home visits to promising scholarship applicants, we welcomed 30 new scholarship students this year. Among them, 75% are girls and young women.

And over the past few months, 20 girls and young women from the 5th cohort of Girls Leading Change have participated in workshops on diverse array of topics, including self-esteem, sexual and reproductive health and rights, leadership, group facilitation, media, advocacy, and self-defense. They have also been out about in the community to promote the need for comprehensive sex education among adolescents and young people, most recently at a community event in conmemoration of Honduran Women's Day.

While many of our programs are sustained through grants and foundation support, the number of new scholarships we are able to extend each year depends heavily on the generosity of people like you. One of the best ways to support our scholarship program is by joining the Adelante Circle—our monthly giving community. Starting at just $5 per month, 100% of monthly gifts are invested young people’s education and provide the ongoing support we need to sustain this high-impact program.

Thank you for your continued support.

In appreciation,
Amanda
