Dear Friends,
On October 11th we celebrated International Girls Day, a day that reminds us of the power girls have to change their communities and our world. For OYE, educating, empowering, and engaging girls and young women is a priority.
Any, pictured above, found out about OYE in late 2015 when young leaders from OYE facilitated workshops on sexual health at her school. Like many young people in OYE, Any comes from a broken home, where she lives with her mother, stepfather, siblings and a niece. The instability in her home, coupled with her biological father’s lack of interest in being a part of her life, troubles her and affects her emotionally, socially, and academically.
In OYE, Any has gained confidence in herself, found a sense of belonging, and built relationships with people she can confide in and trust. Because of girls’ increased vulnerability to (sexual) violence and depression, building their confidence and providing them with social and emotional support is a crucial part of our work. Your generous gifts allow us to continue to provide these crucial services to girls and young women in our community.
Beyond receiving a scholarship and participating in OYE's youth-led sports program, Any is one of 25 teen girls who participate in “Let Girls Lead,” a global movement that empowers girls to take charge of their lives, create solutions to the challenges they face, tell their stories, and lead social change in their communities. These girls, mentored and guided by Keyla from our last update, have become empowered to speak up for their rights and actively participate in advocacy efforts to promote the implementation of integral sexual education in local public schools. Furthermore, girls (and boys) from OYE's diverse youth-led programs joined forces to write, illustrate, and digitalize "Mi amor y yo," a series of comics that reflect the challenges and hard decisions young people face during their teen years and promote the importance of young people's access to integral sexual education.
We are so grateful for your continued support of our efforts to make a real impact in the lives of girls and young women in our community. We couldn't do this important work without you!
In appreciation,
Amanda
P.S. The pictures included below show a group of the girls at their meeting this past Saturday, where they discussed how they would share the recently published comic book with their peers and received a T-shirt with an image of young activist Malala Yousafzai, who has and continues to be a source of inspiration for girls across the globe.
