We provide out-of-school children without access to education in a safe space to learn basic literacy and numeracy skills on weekends, helping them transition into formal schools after 9 months. Our beneficiaries are children in Northern Nigeria with access to only traditional Arabic learning. The absence of schools in their communities, and guardians who harbor false myths about Western education, means these children are likely never to gain a formal education. Our project gives them a chance!
High rates of poverty, illiteracy, and false myths have led to an increased number of out-of-school children in Northern Nigeria. Most children work to support their families financially during school hours, depriving them of attending classes and leading to school dropouts in the long term. These have deprived them of their basic fundamental right to education, placing them at an economic disadvantage and further continuing the cycle of poverty.
Our Safe Space caters to the educational needs of out-of-school children. These children learn Basic Literacy, Numeracy, and Social Skills, in a safe and stable environment after which they are transitioned into school. Facilitators are trained to provide fast-track teaching, enabling learners to catch up with their peers in formal schools. Community advocacy is conducted to ensure the children have access to support during the training in the safe space and the transitioning process.
Our program ignites and sustains interest in learning which empowers the children with foundational skills needed to excel in life. It increases the awareness of the importance of formal education in the community and encourages other parents to enroll their children in school. By gaining an education, there is an increase in productive workforce which contributes to community development.
