After the graduation ceremony of our thirty (30) children beneficiaries at the end of 2023, where the top three (3) children were provided with scholarships to enable them to enrol into formal schools, we continued our journey of providing a safe space for out-of-school children in Kware community.
In January, we enrolled 30 new children for the 2024 phase of the Safe Space programme to receive literacy, numeracy and social skills lessons every weekend for nine (9) months. Of the 30 children beneficiaries, 22 are girls, an increase from the 19 in 2023. The steady increase in the participation of girls, indicates a favourable impact of our programme in helping improve girl child education in Kware community.
The baseline assessment conducted to assess the knowledge levels of the children in February before full commencement of learning showed that 83% of the children could not identify alphabets, sounds and numbers, nor could they read simple words or perform simple arithmetic. We trust that by the end of the programme period, the narrative will be different as our 2023 beneficiaries had an average increase of 17% in the mean literacy scores and a 15% increase in the mean numeracy scores in their endline assessment scores from their baseline assessment scores.
The far-reaching impact of the safe space project, especially for the children, is why we are resolute in our commitment to ensuring that underserved children can acquire the foundational educational knowledge and skills they need to grow, thrive and compete favourably with their peers.
Your immeasurable support makes a great difference in the lives of our children beneficiaries and in the work we do. With your support and commitment, we know that we can significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children in Kware community and consistently provide them with quality learning in our Safe Space.
Kindly keep supporting our work by donating and sharing why you choose to support us with your community of family and friends.
Thank you!
