Many older people in poor communities rely on unsafe sticks or tree branches to walk, which puts them at risk of falls. This project will provide 500 safe, well-made walking aids to elderly people who cannot afford them. Walking aids will help them move around safely, reduce isolation, and lower the burden on caregivers. We will work through community health workers and elders' groups to reach those most in need.
In many rural and low-income areas, elderly people walk with the help of unsafe sticks, broken canes, or tree branches. These make walking risky and increase the chance of falling. Without better tools, many stop leaving their homes or rely too much on others. Families also struggle to assist them due to work demands or long distances. Safe walking aids are not available in most of these communities.
The project will provide 500 strong, adjustable walking aids to older people who already struggle with unsafe makeshift sticks. These walking aids are stable, lightweight, and built for outdoor and indoor use. Health workers will help identify the most at-risk elders, and delivery will be done directly. The project will also work with local carpenters or small shops to assemble some of the walking aids.
The project will help older people move with more safety and confidence, reducing the risk of injury. Walking aids will make it easier for them to go outside, attend events, or visit family. The project also reduces the pressure on caregivers who often help with movement. It creates a simple system that communities can adopt to keep helping more elderly people over time using low-cost tools and local workers.
