Unsafe Walking Increase Fall Risks for Elderly

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for supporting the Give 500 Walking Aids to Elderly People in Need project. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and concern for older people who face mobility challenges every day.

In many rural and low-income communities, elderly people rely on improvised walking supports such as tree branches, damaged sticks, or broken canes. These makeshift tools provide little stability and increase the risk of falls, injuries, and loss of independence. For many older people, even simple activities such as visiting neighbors, attending community gatherings, or accessing healthcare become difficult and unsafe.

We are grateful for the donations received so far. However, the funds currently available are not sufficient to begin implementation of the project. Additional support is needed before procurement, assembly, transportation, beneficiary identification, and distribution activities can commence.

This project aims to provide 500 durable and adjustable walking aids to elderly people who cannot afford them. Community health workers and local elders' groups will help identify beneficiaries facing the greatest mobility challenges. Some walking aids will also be assembled locally, helping reduce costs and support community participation.

A reliable walking aid can make a significant difference in an older person's life. It can improve balance, reduce the likelihood of falls, increase confidence, and make it easier to move around independently. Improved mobility can also reduce feelings of isolation and help older people remain active within their communities.

We remain committed to implementing this project and continue working toward the resources needed to launch the first phase. As progress is made, we look forward to sharing updates, photographs, and stories from the elderly beneficiaries who will receive support.

Thank you for helping older people move more safely and maintain their dignity and independence.

Warm regards,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
