From Virtual Learning to Hands-On Healing: A Colombian Partnership in Burn Rehabilitation

By Marie-Claude Pelchat | Project Leader

Since 2021, our team at Sunshine Foundation has been dedicated to enhancing professional skills in burn rehabilitation across Latin America through online courses in Spanish. Over 250 therapists from Latin America have participated in these online courses, with nearly half hailing from Colombia. These therapists have shown incredible enthusiasm, fostering knowledge exchange within their networks and prioritizing collaborative growth.

Building on the success of our virtual programs, we launched an in-person internship program tailored for Colombian therapists in October 2024. After a rigorous selection process, Luz and Ibeth, two outstanding occupational therapists, were chosen to participate in this transformative opportunity.

Meet Luz and Ibeth: Champions of Burn Rehabilitation

  • Luz, from Medellín's Hospital San Vicente Fundación, has 13 years of clinical experience, including 9 focused on burn rehabilitation. She works at a nonprofit hospital that serves over 1,600 burn patients annually, providing both inpatient and outpatient care for adults and children.
  • Ibeth, based at Hospital Federico Lleras Acosta in Ibagué, is a dedicated therapist who recently celebrated her first year in burn rehabilitation. Her hospital's burn center, established in 2023, serves the southwestern region of Colombia. Ibeth plays a pivotal role in planning rehabilitation programs and training her team. She joined Sunshine’s online courses upon recommendations from fellow Colombian therapists, seeking knowledge to build the hospital’s new burn rehabilitation services.

Learning Beyond Techniques: The Sunshine Internship Experience

During their internship in Taiwan, Luz and Ibeth observed real-world cases, discussed assessment and goal-setting strategies, and honed hands-on skills like splinting, scar assessment and fabrication of Otoform inserts. They also gained insight into Sunshine’s community-based service model, addressing the different barriers faced by burn survivors after hospital discharge, like transportation challenges and wound care issues, which are critical for ensuring patients adhere to their rehabilitation plans.

Reflecting on the experience, Luz shared:
"I often see patients confused about scar changes. Sunshine’s team approaches patient needs comprehensively, offering tailored resources at each stage to improve physical function while addressing emotional well-being. This holistic care fosters reintegration into society."

For Ibeth, the internship illuminated the importance of setting clear goals for each rehabilitation phase, from acute care to outpatient services. She emphasized:
"This hands-on training not only sharpened my technical skills but also gave me the confidence to tackle challenges and ensure functional improvement for burn survivors."

A Lasting Impact on Burn Care

Sunshine Foundation’s international training program seamlessly integrates theory and practice, empowering therapists like Luz and Ibeth to elevate burn rehabilitation services in their communities.

Ibeth reflected:
"The online courses built my foundational knowledge, but the internship allowed me to solve practical challenges and solidify my confidence in burn rehabilitation."

Luz highlighted two key takeaways:

  1. Tailored Solutions: "Sitting with a burn survivor, analyzing their scars and circumstances, and collaboratively identifying problems is vital for creating effective solutions."
  2. Prioritization: "Therapists must focus on immediate priorities rather than overwhelming patients with information, guiding them step-by-step through recovery."

Through structured training, Sunshine is enabling therapists to enhance their expertise and transform burn rehabilitation services in Colombia. This ripple effect ensures that more burn survivors receive comprehensive and compassionate care, helping them rebuild their lives with dignity.

Call-to-Action: Help Us Reach More Burn Survivors

You can make a difference today. By supporting Sunshine’s international training programs, you’re empowering therapists like Luz and Ibeth to bring life-changing rehabilitation to burn survivors in need. Together, we can build a world where every burn survivor has access to the care they deserve.

We need your support to:

  • Continue to develop learning resources in English and Spanish, like online courses, educative blogs and videos. These resources help establish a sound knowledge foundation to further develop clinical practice.
  • Continue to organize presential training and internships. These face-to-face training are necessary to help learners contextualize in the real world and put in practice what they have learned online.
