A Look Back at the First Semester

Despite the complicated circumstances created by the pandemic, our scholars continued their hard work in their various degree programs at the University of Guyana. Due to a delayed opening, UG's first semester just wrapped up in March. Below, three of our scholars describe their favorites courses taken during the first term.

"Pediatric Medicine was my favorite course. The reason being is that the field is so vast and we often think of the pediatric population as "little adults" when, in fact, this is far from being so. I was able to get a deeper understanding as to how a future physician should approach this group and deliver the best care possible."

"This term my favorite course was Business Leadership. I have learned a lot about leadership and management. This course absolutely enhances my passion to become a good leader. I have always wanted to become a good role model in society and [make] a positive difference in the lives of those underprivileged. I will take away all that I can from this course and put it into practice, especially in my indigenous community."

"Mathematics because it was so difficult for me I made more time for it and practiced as much as I can. I am not where I want to be, but having this challenge with this course makes me want to learn it and master it."

Two new SAGE Scholars begin their studies!

The 2020-2021 academic year has gotten off to a strong start with two new SAGE Scholars beginning their studies at the University of Guyana. We are so proud of them!

Meet Mohendra!

Major: Industrial Engineering

To be a SAGE Scholar is truly an honor. To be able to pursue my goals at the highest level in my country, it's a wonderful opportunity. Being a Scholar distinguishes you from others. It basically tells you that you are not alone and you did not get here out of luck; you work hard and you are rewarded. I am proud to be a part of the SAGE family, and I am grateful for myself and fellow Guyanese to be given such a tremendous opportunity.

Meet Asheanna!

Major: Applied and Exploration Geology

Being selected as a SAGE Scholar is a great honor for me. This scholarship has given me the opportunity to move one step closer to achieving my goals. Receiving this scholarship did not just provide me with financial support but it also motivates me as it tells me that I am seen to have the potential for a brighter future. Through this scholarship, I am able to benefit greatly with financial aid, and it prevents me from taking student loans or putting my studies on hold. The SAGE scholarship inspires me to work hard and fulfill my responsibilities to represent society and give back to my country.

SAGE Graduates in the News

After graduating from the University of Guyana, SAGE Scholars contribute to their country in exciting ways! For example, former SAGE Scholar, Lynn, and her start-up company El Dorado Tours are embarking on an impressive hotel and amusement park project. Scholar Perseverance During Challenging Times

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the closure of the University of Guyana's campus this spring, and SAGE Scholars were forced to continue their studies online. Below, we share some of their experiences:

"It's hard, given that no one expected this, and it took a lot of time to adjust from classroom learning to online, especially the courses that are comprised mainly of reasoning and calculations. But I've put my self forward to face these challenges and complete all of these courses." -SAGE Scholar

"Even though difficulties arose due to internet problems, blackouts, and personal obligations, I will be able to complete all of my courses for this semester." -SAGE Scholar

"Even though there was the closure of UG, my courses were very active, there was even one point in time when I had to submit about four assignments in one week. This had become troublesome, but I fought it the best way possible." -SAGE Scholar

SAGE Graduate Kevin

Former SAGE Scholars are contributing to Guyana in important ways. For example, SAGE graduate Kevin works in the Legal Division of Guyana's Ministry of the Presidency, which is responsible for the administration of the country's developing oil and gas sector. Prior to joining the Ministry of the Presidency, Kevin worked at the Ministry of Social Protection where he collaborated with the UN Office for International Migration.

Kevin reflected on how his education at the University of Guyana impacts his professional life: "The principles, theories, approaches and methods learnt at the University of Guyana through the kind support of the SAGE family and our generous donors, have allowed me these opportunities to continue to contribute to the development and improvement of the lives of not only Guyanese, but those from our neighbour [Venezuela], fleeing the unfortunate political turmoil in their country."

Kevin's work highlights the importance of SAGE's belief that change occurs when young people with drive and talent have opportunities to develop the skills needed to turn their passion into action.
