Scholars' Favorite Courses

By Katie Fotofili | Board Member

Some of our current scholars share their perspectives on their Unversity of Guyana experience, including their favorite courses from the past term and their plans for the summer.

What was your favorite course this past semester, and why?

Dolly: "Architectural Design and Practice 2 was my favourite course this semester. The lecturer allowed us to design a one-room building on our own by phases including the following: cultural, environmental, and building technology. I enjoyed researching and designing a meeting chamber for my village. Building the physical model of my design gave me a tiny perspective on the magnitude of construction (even for a one-room building)."

Cassie: "Computer and Information Security. Though it was a tough course, I really enjoyed learning about the ins and outs of cybersecurity and what it really takes to ensure good protection and defense of systems. We also got to play 'bad guys' developing a few network attacks (all supervised and through authorized pen testing of course) and playing red and blue teams. All and all we got to have fun while we practiced and learned."

What is something you learned this year at UG, or in your programme?

Mikkel: "That not everything is as it seems, keep your head high, believe in yourself and know that you can overcome anything once you put your head to it."

Dolly: "Something I learnt this academic year at UG is to always think everyone around you are smarter than you. During my design course, I was very much confident in my design because I did a lot of research but at my presentation, some questions asked by my lecturer and fellow classmates made me really realize that I may feel I know a lot on a specific topic or feel smarter than someone but that may not always be the case."

What do you plan to do this summer?

Canisha: "I'm devoting this summer to traveling back home and spending some time with my family."

Cassie: "I'll be teaching at a workshop being hosted by the robotics club for learners who just sat the National Grade Six Examinations. We'll be introducing them to programming and the world of robotics. I'm also expecting to take part in the National Science fair, with a team of peers from the robotics club."
