A child who plays is a healthy child

In 2013, the project of Play Rooms of Corporacion Superarse was created to complement the attention of children, since the game constitutes an essential activity for the development of the individual such as education, food or health.

Playing allows a balanced growth of the body, the intelligence of children and their affectivity and sociability: it is an indispensable component in its growth, however in our city there are many children who can not play because they have had the bad luck to be born surrounded by needs, abuse, hunger and child explotation.

During these years they have developed with the children of the Corporación Superarse and with children from other social institutions, programs to stimulate creativity and talent, development of emotional intelligence, encourage communication and in general all the benefits that the game has to the different ages of growth.

At present, an average of 500 children a month are attended, free of charge, in ages between 2 to 18 years, in groups with different conditions such as: situation of displacement or family violence, abandoned or mistreated and children with disabilities. In general, all these groups cared for are children who have very few opportunities to have healthy spaces, guided activities and toys that can truly contribute to their development and growth.

That is why we are now reactivating this important project, since by having more and more children to attend, we have more and more needs, which we hope to cover with different contributions.

Giving happiness through PLAY

Our project “Give hope to 350 Colombian children through PLAY” is FULLY FUNDED thanks to you; here are some of the last achievements within the past few months:

Qualitative report:

The sense of belonging on behalf of the children regarding the care for the space, toys and materials has increased significantly

There is an increased introjection of norms and values to be used in the playroom

The capacity of adaptation of the early childhood beneficiaries has been developed, understanding and incorporating different moments presented in the playroom (greeting, icebreaker activity, central activity, free play, role games and organization of toys and games).

The activities proposed are inclusive as they respond to the diversity of needs of all the children involved, taking into account changes and modifications in contents and strategies according to their ages and interests. The purpose is based on the principle that every child has unique characteristics, interests, abilities and learning needs which compromises us to develop differential educational programs adapted to their needs.

We are progressing in the construction of a proposal for the playroom based on centers of interest (music - technology - motor skills – literature - among others) that will qualify the phases of planning, formulation and evaluation of activities.

The acquisition of the computer classroom has allowed not only playing in child portals, but also small focused research, projection of videos and developing of cognitive skills. On the other hand it has strengthened their familiarization with information technologies from early childhood.

“Low self-esteem is painful, it is a kind of emotional poverty and, like material poverty, gives rise to needs” (Cigman 2004, pp.97). The risk factors faced by Colombian children on a daily basis produce negative effects on self-esteem; to be the victim of sexual abuse, child labour, mistreatment and displacement, among others, impoverishes the child emotionally by affecting the sense of worth. This is why enhancing self-esteem through play as a predictor of resilience for Colombian children becomes a vital priority facing the challenges of overcoming adversity.

Play provides the possibility to act away from the real world, which is known as “divergent thinking” (Kleiber, 1978). This is of great importance when considering resilience because through play, children can symbolize feelings that would be hard to represent by language, providing an opportunity to work on the solution of conflicts in a safe and pleasurable mode.

Project Achievements (September - October)

It has been one month since our Project was approved in GlobalGiving, thanks to the support of 66 individual donors we were able to collect 6.345 dollars!!!, so far the main achievements in Superarse´s playgrounds are:

We developed an artistic workshop to create and handle puppets; the creativity and development of motor skills were the main purposes of the activity. Creativity can act as a means to transform the way reality is perceived and enable development of the ability to cope with suffering and pain.

7 music workshops were conducted with the aim of enhancing musical skills. Art activities are characterized by the presence of analogical thought that is transformed in creativity, an essential component of resilience (Smolucha and Smolucha, 1983). Art offers an opportunity to increase empowerment, motivation, self-esteem, sense of belonging, sense of personal power, communication, collaboration and initiative; finally, art provides a chance for the individual to be valued for personal capabilities and strengths, and to develop social relationships and a positive attitude towards life (Cumming and Visser, 2009).

The sense of belonging has increased allowing the children to feel the space as their own and to follow the rules and understand the importance of a good behavior during their time in the playground

We equipped an interactive room within the playground with 7 computers to offer the children the possibility to explore and play with pedagogical accompaniment

We are developing a purpose to create different interest units (Music, technology, motor skills, literature, among others) taking into account the different abilities and motivations of the children

Thanks to your support, 418 children had the possibility to play and create in Superarse´s playground. These are all significant contributions regarding resilience because they can build an important protective layer that helps children to make sense of their reality and be active agents of change in their lives.
