Temporary Shelters Increase Malaria Risk

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for supporting the Give Mosquito Repellents to 100 Displaced Families project. We sincerely appreciate your generosity and concern for families living in difficult conditions after displacement.

Displaced families often live in overcrowded shelters with limited protection from mosquitoes. Poor drainage, stagnant water, damaged housing, and inadequate sanitation create conditions where mosquitoes thrive. Children, pregnant women, and elderly people are particularly vulnerable to malaria and other mosquito-borne illnesses. For many families, purchasing repellents or other protective measures is simply beyond their means.

We are grateful for the donations received so far. However, the funds currently available are not sufficient to begin implementation of the project. Additional support is needed before procurement, transportation, beneficiary identification, and distribution activities can commence.

This project aims to provide mosquito repellents to 100 displaced families living in temporary settlements. Beneficiaries will receive repellents suitable for daily use, along with simple guidance on mosquito prevention and safe application. The intervention is intended to help families reduce exposure to mosquito bites during periods of increased malaria transmission.

Preventing mosquito bites is one of the most effective ways to reduce malaria infections. Access to repellents can help families sleep more comfortably, reduce illness, avoid medical expenses, and protect vulnerable household members from preventable disease. Small preventive measures can make a meaningful difference in communities where healthcare resources are limited.

We remain committed to implementing this project and continue working toward the resources needed to launch the first phase. As progress is made, we look forward to sharing updates, photographs, and stories from the families who will benefit from this support.

Thank you for helping protect displaced families from malaria and supporting their health and wellbeing during a challenging period.

Warm regards,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
