Even before the war, Lyudmyla and Mykola dreamed of a big family filled with love, care, and laughter. Their hearts were open to kindness — which is why they created a family-type children’s home, raising six children as their own. Their small house in a frontline village in the Sumy region was full of warmth, hugs, and hope for a peaceful future.

But the war changed everything.

Even after Russian troops entered their village, the family didn’t leave. They stayed together — cooking meals, comforting the children, and doing their best to preserve a sense of normalcy. Despite constant danger, they didn’t lose hope.

Then the unimaginable happened.
In March 2022, just one day after the occupation began, Mykola — the father, protector, and heart of the family — disappeared without a trace.
Days of searching turned into weeks of painful uncertainty. Eventually, they learned the devastating truth: Mykola had been kidnapped, tortured, and brutally killed.

This loss shattered every member of the family.
But it hit the children the hardest.
They had lost their father — not once, but twice.

After the Loss — a New Fight for Life and Learning

Lyudmyla was left alone with six children, without a steady income, government support, or time to grieve. She became everything at once: a mother, a provider, a counselor, and a protector. Together with the older children, she started growing vegetables and managing a small farm just to provide food, warmth, and care.

But one more challenge loomed — access to education.

The children were expected to learn online, but the family had only one smartphone to share between six children.
Online learning became a daily struggle — slow, fragmented, and isolating.
Each lesson became a marathon. Each day — a test of endurance and faith.

More Than a Device — A Lifeline

At this critical moment, the Children of Heroes Foundation stepped in to help.
Four of the six children received tablets — finally giving them access to full-time education. They were also enrolled in educational programs provided by the foundation, including school subjects and creative art classes that helped them process their emotions.

These weren’t just devices.
They were a symbol of belief, of connection.
A quiet but powerful message:

“You are not alone. We are here. Your dreams still matter.”

How Tech Changes Lives: More Than Learning

Laptops and tablets give children access to:

• school and educational programs provided by the foundation

• psychological support, even from shelters during air raids

• social connection with friends, preventing emotional isolation

• creative and leisure activities, which help reduce anxiety

In war, a device is more than a tool.
It’s a way to stay human. To feel safe. To keep dreaming.

Scale of the Need. As of June 2025:

• Over 13,000 children are under the care of the Children of Heroes Foundation

• 10–15 new children join our programs every day

• 1 in 2 lacks a basic device for learning

• 662 children need tablets

• 294 children need laptops

Without these tools, children fall behind.
They miss out on education, social interaction, and emotional support — the very things that help them heal and grow.

As of December 2024, the Children of Heroes Charity Fund has provided 3,628 devices to support the education of children affected by the war. Among them, 1,597 children received tablets, and 1,973 children received laptops. In addition to these essential tools, the Fund also supplies computers and monitors to ensure that children have the resources they need to continue their studies and build a better future.

Stories of Resilience and Hope

Iryna’s life changed when her father voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in February 2022. He served in the Kyiv region but tragically passed away on February 2, 2023, due to health issues. Despite this loss, Iryna remains a bright and talented child with a passion for drawing and singing. Recognizing her potential, the Foundation provided her with a laptop, along with stationery, clothing and essential hygiene and food sets. With her new device, Iryna can now explore her creativity, complete school assignments, and stay connected with her teachers and peers.

Dima and Dasha lost their father in March 2022 while he was serving in the territorial defense forces. When their family joined the Fund a year later, their mother was still grieving but remained determined to move forward. While she was initially hesitant to accept financial aid, she was deeply grateful for the continuous support provided. Through the Fund’s programs, Dima pursued IT courses, and Dasha took acting classes as part of the mentoring program. Both children received a laptop, clothes, shoes, school supplies, and first-aid kits. They also attended summer camps, giving them a chance to heal and make new friends. Their mother’s unwavering optimism and gratitude inspire us to continue our mission.
