As we move into 2025, we are approaching the 3rd anniversary of escalating conflict in Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine sparking the fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II. An estimated 8.1 million people fled the country with neighbouring countries seeing waves of refugees crossing their borders, seeking safety and support. At the peak, more than 8 million people were internally displaced and although many have returned home, there are still 3.6 million IDPs in Ukraine. Close to 12.7 million people will require humanitarian assistance in 2025.
GlobalMedic teams have been on the ground in Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania providing assistance to Ukrainian refugees and IDPs impacted by the conflict. Our response has spanned multiple sectors, with the distribution of food hampers, hot meals, hygiene items, shelter items, medical supplies, water purification units, more. Almost three years later, there is still an immense need for humanitarian support and GlobalMedic is continuing to find innovating ways to work with impacted populations.
Most recently, GlobalMedic worked with our partners in Moldova to establish a hydroponic, vertical farm. This equipment will allow for year-round growth of fresh produce which will be incorporated into our existing food security program supporting Ukrainian refugees. It will also create learning and employment opportunities for the Moldovans and Ukrainians who work with us. Our team was in Moldova this month alongside technical experts to build the farm and conduct training with local operators.
We continue to look ahead to the needs of Ukrainians impacted by this conflict. Donations raised through this fund will go towards supporting food security and WASH programs. Please consider a donation today!
