Project Report: Installed Electrical Submersible Pump in Umerkot, Sindh

Alkhidmat Foundation – WASH Program
Location: Umerkot, Sindh (Village: Allah Dino Paro)
Beneficiaries: 250 people

Project Overview

The Alkhidmat Foundation, under its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program, successfully installed an electrical submersible pump in Umerkot, Sindh, specifically serving the village of Allah Dino Paro. This project is part of our ongoing efforts to provide clean and safe drinking water to underserved and vulnerable communities in Pakistan.

The newly installed submersible pump will directly benefit 250 residents, providing them with reliable access to clean water, which is essential for daily use such as drinking, cooking, and sanitation. Prior to this installation, the villagers faced significant challenges in accessing clean water, often having to travel long distances to fetch water from unreliable sources.

Key Objectives of the Project

  1. Provide Clean Drinking Water: Ensure that 250 residents of Allah Dino Paro have access to a consistent and safe water supply.
  2. Improve Health and Hygiene: Reduce the risk of waterborne diseases by providing clean water for consumption and sanitation.
  3. Reduce Water Collection Burden: Alleviate the burden on women and children, who previously had to walk long distances to collect water.

Project Activities and Implementation

  1. Site Selection and Survey:
The site for the submersible pump was selected based on a comprehensive community needs assessment conducted by Alkhidmat’s field team. The village of Allah Dino Paro was identified as one of the most water-stressed areas in Umerkot, Sindh.

  2. Installation of the Submersible Pump:
The electrical submersible pump was installed with support from local engineers and laborers. The pump is designed to draw water from deep underground, providing a sustainable water source for the community.

  3. Community Engagement:
To ensure the sustainability of the project, local community members were trained on how to maintain and operate the pump. Awareness sessions were also conducted on the importance of water conservation and hygiene.

  4. Monitoring and Evaluation:
A monitoring team was deployed to track the project's progress and ensure that the pump is functioning efficiently. Regular maintenance checks are scheduled to ensure long-term sustainability.

Impact on the Community

The installation of the electrical submersible pump has transformed daily life in the village. Key outcomes include:

  • Improved Health: With access to clean water, there has been a noticeable reduction in waterborne illnesses, especially among children.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: The time previously spent fetching water is now redirected to productive activities, such as education and income generation.
  • Empowered Women and Children: Women and children, who are primarily responsible for water collection, now have more time for education and other social activities.

    Next Steps and Sustainability
    • Ongoing Maintenance: Regular checks will be conducted to ensure the submersible pump remains in good working condition.
    • Water Conservation Campaign: Alkhidmat plans to launch an awareness campaign focused on the importance of water conservation to ensure sustainable use of the water resource.
    • Replication in Other Villages: Based on the success of this project, we aim to replicate similar installations in other water-scarce regions of Sindh.
