Updates and Additions

By Lev Horodyskyj | Founder

Greetings all,

We have done some program reorganization for Greenworks to better integrate the various components that we have developed over the last few years that revolve around environmental stewardship.  The diversity of our programs under the Greenworks umbrella is a result of feedback from the partner institutions we work with, but center around project-based learning.  We envision the Greenworks program as a triangle with community, students, and teachers at the vertices:

  • Student-Teacher Interface:  here we work on the project design curriculum that helps students think through and design high-quality environmental stewardship projects.  We currently have English, Portuguese, and Ukrainian translations of the curriculum and are working on developing the Spanish and Indonesian translations
  • Teacher-Community Interface:  here we help teachers develop "extension" projects that help them take their work and research out of the classroom and lab and into the broader community.  This is important to help communities improve their interactions with and use of science and to help teachers improve their communication and co-development skills
  • Student-Community Interface:  here we are developing travel opportunities for students to visit and work with communities to better understand their challenges through lived experience and to co-develop projects that address community needs.  We were developing a college collaboration to help inaugurate this segment this summer, but it unfortunately fell through.  We hope to lauch next year with more responsive partners

In reality, these three programs blur into each other, with the Project Design curriculum spawning actual projects that can be funded, or the Extension program integrating students, or the Exchange program implementing projects designed by students and communities.  Your donations help support this work and we hope you consider contributing to this fund throughout this year to help fund students, teachers, and communities throughout 2026.

Our Brazil and Ukraine projects are progressing, with the teams visiting their communities multiple times over the past few months and acquiring materials to complete work later in the year during university holidays.  Additionally, we are onboarding an Indonesian team who, like our Brazilian colleagues, will be working on a native bees project.

With gratitude,

Lev
