Almost there! Concluding the First Phase of the New Forest Guide/Catalogue!

By Gabriel Espasas | President, Board of Directors, PHA Forest

Priority: Restore the Boardwalk to this 2019 State
Priority: Restore the Boardwalk to this 2019 State

We pretty much have kept to our schedule for the first “installment” of the new Forest catalogue and guide. Phase I of the guide focuses on our over 70 species of fungi and should be online by the end of April. Phases II and III will focus on the 224 species of flora and fauna inhabiting the 51-acre Pterocarpus Forest. The 2010 preliminary Forest inventory included only 44 species of flora and 52 of fauna.

We’ll be letting you know when the inventory is about to be published.

The successful conclusion of the Forest Inventory Project has been made possible by the support of generous friends and donors like you – so it’s important for us to say thank you once more! You’ve made this happen!

Other Forest activities and plans that may be of interest include:

  • Expansion of the Boardwalk. PHA Executive Director José Oquendo has committed to outlining an expansion of the Forest's 3/4-mile elevated boardwalk to reach a stream alongside the swamp forest, giving visitors access to more of the Forest and its natural wonders
  • New QR Code-based Virtual Tour. The popular “Forest Tour App” is being phased out and a more economic, easier to administer system using QR Codes at existing Forest signage and stops is being developed.
  • ATH Móvil for Nonprofits. The most popular island app that lets people transfer money to businesses and nonprofits will soon be available, on-site and online.
  • Spring Cleaning and Maintenance. Upkeep and cleaning of the fiberglass walkway and structural improvements will be undertaken in the coming months. Given that the boardwalk sits on “stilts” embedded in the swamp forest soil, it needs occasional fine tuning to keep it safe and strong.

Details about the Forest Catalogue and the initiatives above will be provided in our next report. But you can also keep up to date by joining our over 7,000 followers on Facebook and 3,000 on Instagram, if you haven’t done so already!

Our commitment to using the Forest as a living classroom for environmental education, as well as a place for passive recreation and scientific research remains steadfast. And our ability to do so is made possible by your support. Thank you!
