Dear friend of Halt Poverty,

Thank you for supporting our project to plant native and fruit-bearing trees in the Tsaranoro Valley. Your generosity is helping us protect the soil, feed families and bring our community together around shared orchards. Here is where we stand:

Progress at a glance

Funding: US$2,198 raised of US$5,200 (42%) from 73 donations; US$3,002 still to raise.

Outputs

250+ fruit trees planted since 2023: mango, orange, loquat, lemon, avocado and peach.
1000+ Native trees planted in the valley since 2015.

Outcomes

Community ownership: residents help plan and plant, which builds pride and keeps trees cared for.
Soil and water protection: roots hold slopes together, reduce erosion and landslide risk, and help rain soak into the ground.
Food access: fresh local fruit at no cost for households within the area.
Resilience: native trees need less water and fertiliser and cope better with extreme weather, including winter frost in the valley.
Biodiversity: blossom feeds pollinators; trees shelter insects, birds, lemurs, chameleons, etc.

Impact

Already visible: stronger community involvement and shared ownership of the planting.
Medium term: seasonal fruit for families and neighbours once trees bear, plus sustainable harvest of fruit and forest products.
Long term: fewer new lavaka, less crop and land loss, less silting of rice paddies, steadier water flow, and room for ecotourism as habitats recover.

Challenges and Next Steps

Funding gap: 58% of the goal is still to be raised. US$10 plants 10 trees; US$100 plants 100.
Climate: heavy rains, zebu, and frost threaten young trees, so native species stay the backbone of planting.
Measuring results: add tree counts, survival checks, photo points at planted and eroded sites, and a record of participating households.
Next season: plant before the next rains, prioritising active erosion slopes and areas facing food poverty, and invite monthly giving for aftercare.

We are having some technical issues, but we will share more pictures from the field once ready.

Seedling Nurturing: Provides the resources needed to grow saplings in nurseries before they are planted.
Community Planting: Empowers local planters and volunteers to safely plant and monitor the trees.

Donations like yours are an investment in the future of our climate and communities. On the one hand, planting fruit-bearing trees provides sustainable food security, fresh and organic produce, and significant long-term grocery savings. Environmentally, they improve air quality, provide shade, and support local biodiversity. On the other hand, native trees provide the vital food sources, shelter, and nesting habitats that local insects, birds, and mammals depend on for survival. Native species are uniquely adapted to our regional climate, giving them a much higher survival rate during extreme weather events. We are now in the midst of winter season. Winter days in Madagascar are usually dry, while nights and early mornings can become very crisp. Frost occasionally occurs in mountainous areas such as Tsaranoro valley. With deeper, stronger root systems, native trees improve soil health, prevent erosion, and better manage rainwater runoff compared to non-native species.
