We are working in partnership with remote communities in rural Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau who lack basic sanitation facilities and knowledge on how disease spreads. These communities are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 as well as Cholera, Ebola and other diseases. This project will work with communities to build hand-washing stations, clean water wells and provide training on how to prevent the spread of disease. This will give communities the tools they need to stay safe and healthy.
There are thousands of people living below the poverty line in rural communities in Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau. They lack access to basic healthcare and do not have the tools they need to prevent and minimise the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Without clean water, critical knowledge or resources, they are extremely vulnerable this disease. The vast majority of people here live below the extreme poverty line and do not have any other means to respond to this threat.
This project will provide these communities with training on how to prevent disease being spread between people, with an emphasis on washing hands and storing food and water safely. Young women in each community will be trained in first aid and natural medicine to become health stewards in their respective villages. Hand-washing stations with soap/ash will be erected in the villages, for households, schools and in public areas in each village. Wells will provide clean water for hand-washing.
This project will allow communities to protect themselves against the Coronavirus pandemic as well as future outbreaks of other infectious diseases such as Cholera and Ebola. By providing the resources and knowledge needed to stay safe and avoid disease, this project will contribute to the health and general wellbeing of thousands of people living below the poverty line in these regions, saving lives of those most vulnerable to disease.
