Transforming Lives Through Spine Surgery

By Sultan Ahmed | Project Leader

Twenty years of relentless service to the people of Afghanistan

As FMIC enters its twentieth anniversary year, we reflect on a remarkable journey that began as Afghanistan’s first dedicated children’s hospital and has since evolved into a leading tertiary care institution serving the wider healthcare needs of people across the country. While our roots in paediatric care remain central to our identity, FMIC today provides specialised and life-saving services to patients of all ages. During this reporting period, although no contributions were received through GlobalGiving for this project, FMIC continued to deliver essential, high-quality care to vulnerable patients across Afghanistan. Our teams remain steadfast in their commitment to ensuring that those in need—including children requiring complex spinal surgery—receive treatment, compassion, and support regardless of their families’ financial circumstances.

 Expanding Access Through Patient Welfare

Access to specialised spine surgery remains out of reach for many Afghan families due to financial constraints. Through FMIC’s Patient Welfare Programme, vulnerable patients receive critical support to access treatment. Between January and March 2026, 17,159 patients benefited from welfare assistance, including 2,536 inpatients and 14,623 outpatients, with 1.14 million USD disbursed during this period.

Since its establishment, the programme has supported approximately 900,000 patients, with cumulative financial assistance exceeding 64 million USD, ensuring that children requiring complex procedures are not denied care due to cost.

A Story of Healing: Zahidullah’s Recovery

Four-year-old Zahidullah from Paktika Province had been living with a worsening spinal deformity for nearly a year. His condition progressed to the point where he lost movement in both legs. After unsuccessful attempts to find treatment elsewhere, his family brought him to FMIC.

Specialists at FMIC diagnosed severe spinal tuberculosis that had destroyed multiple vertebrae, leaving him with a life-threatening deformity. His case required a complex two-stage surgical intervention to stabilise and reconstruct his spine. The procedures were successful, and Zahidullah gradually began to regain movement. Today, he is able to stand and walk independently, a transformation that has restored not only his mobility but also his future.

His story is a powerful reminder of how timely intervention and financial support can change the course of a child’s life.

Why Your Support Matters

Children with spinal deformities and complex conditions continue to face significant barriers to care in Afghanistan. Without timely surgical intervention, many risk permanent disability or life-threatening complications. As FMIC enters its twentieth year of service, the demand for such specialised care continues to grow.

A Call to Action

We invite you to support FMIC in this milestone year. Your contribution helps provide advanced surgical care, rehabilitation, and financial assistance to children like Zahidullah. Together, we can ensure that more children regain mobility, independence, and hope for the future.

Thank you for standing with FMIC and the people of Afghanistan.
