Help 150 At-Risk Girls Become Nurses in Nigeria

Help 150 At-Risk Girls Become Nurses in Nigeria

Summary

In Nigeria, thousands of girls drop out of school due to poverty, early marriage, and lack of opportunities. Many dream of becoming nurses but cannot afford tuition, uniforms, and books. This project will help 150 at-risk girls gain nursing education by covering school fees, materials, and mentorship. With Nigeria facing one of the lowest nurse-to-patient ratios in Africa, investing in these girls now will build a stronger healthcare workforce and break cycles of poverty for their families.

Challenge

Nigeria faces a severe nursing shortage, with fewer than 20 nurses per 10,000 people compared to the global average of 48. At the same time, many girls from low-income families are unable to pursue education due to high school fees, child labor, and forced early marriage. This leaves them trapped in poverty with limited career paths, while the healthcare system struggles with inadequate staffing. Without support, these girls lose the chance for education, and Nigeria loses much-needed nurses.

Solution

The project will fund tuition, books, uniforms, and exam fees for 150 girls to complete nursing school. Each girl will also receive mentorship from practicing nurses to guide them through training and career development.By lifting the financial burden, the project creates a pathway to education and employment. Graduating as qualified nurses, the girls will enter the workforce ready to serve communities where medical staff are scarce, while also improving their own livelihoods and family stability.

Long-Term Impact

Graduates of this program will help close the gap in Nigeria's healthcare workforce, directly contributing to better patient care in rural and urban communities. With steady incomes, these girls will also uplift their families, preventing future cycles of poverty. Many may inspire other young girls to stay in school and pursue professional training. Over time, this initiative strengthens healthcare delivery, reduces unemployment among women, and builds a generation of skilled nurses in Nigeria.
