Summary

BEAM Education Foundations supports Burmese migrants to earn their high school diplomas and apply to university. We and our generous partners are already supporting 34 students in their living and schooling costs, but we are short on exam funding for 18 students.

Challenge

There are an estimated 3 million Myanmar migrants and refugees living in Thailand. Some of these migrant youths are able to study in refugee camps, local villages, or temple schools. However, because these schools are unaccredited, unfortunately many of their students cannot qualify to enter university. Lack of education leads to lack of opportunities, which is one of the main problems migrant populations face.

Solution

BEAM finds and recruits smart, motivated migrant students, provides classes and tutoring, and helps them pass the American GED exam for high school equivalency. Students study the core math, science, social studies, and language arts subjects and also participate in volunteer, leadership, and cultural exchange activities. Our students leave BEAM with a GED diploma that is widely recognized by universities as well as the skills to thrive in their further studies, work, and lives.

Long-Term Impact

BEAM has directly impacted over 200 students since 2010. Our students gain the confidence and skills to create their own opportunities, and join a community that prioritizes life-long learning. This has both an individual and societal impact. Our students diversify classrooms, volunteer, promote migrant rights, and motivate other youths to stay in school. After graduating from university, many of our students return to Myanmar to work and help lead the next generation.
