Bukavu Emergency: Rebuilding Lives

By Ferdinand | COORDINATOR

1. Context and Rationale

On August 26, a devastating fire swept through several neighborhoods of Bukavu, particularly Cimpunda and Mosala. More than 1,000 homes were destroyed, leaving nearly 2,000 families without shelter, resources, or immediate prospects.

In a context already marked by vulnerability and the absence of effective social safety nets, these families are now forced to sleep in the open, exposed to harsh weather conditions and serious health risks. The situation is even more alarming as it comes just days before the start of the school year, putting children’s education at serious risk.

2. Project Objective

This project aims to provide an urgent and structured response to the essential needs of affected families while laying the foundation for long-term recovery.

Main objective:
To deliver emergency humanitarian assistance to more than 2,000 families affected by the fire, restoring minimum living conditions and preserving human dignity.

3. Expected Results

  • Families have access to safe temporary shelter
  • Basic food needs are met
  • Hygiene conditions are improved
  • Children return to school with proper school kits
  • Communities regain a minimum level of stability to begin rebuilding

4. Key Activities

  • Distribution of emergency shelter materials (tarps, tents)
  • Provision of essential food supplies
  • Distribution of hygiene kits
  • Delivery of school kits to affected children
  • Identification and prioritization of the most vulnerable households
  • Engagement of local volunteers in project implementation

5. Implementation Approach

The project relies on strong community involvement. Local volunteers will play a key role in ensuring transparent beneficiary identification and fair distribution of aid.

The team is currently in the preparatory phase, including the identification of facilitators and direct beneficiaries. Project implementation is scheduled to begin in November 2025.

6. Budget

The total budget for the project is estimated at USD 65,000.

To date, no funds have been raised. However, through collaboration with GlobalGiving, we are confident in our ability to reach this target and mobilize the necessary resources to respond effectively to this emergency.

7. Expected Long-Term Impact

Beyond immediate relief, this project will contribute to:

  • Restoring dignity to affected families
  • Supporting the continuity of children’s education
  • Strengthening community resilience to future disasters
  • Breaking the cycle of poverty worsened by crisis

Investing in these families today offers a real opportunity for recovery and a better future.

8. Call to Donors

Today, these families have lost everything. But together, we can help them rebuild their lives.

Every contribution matters—whether it provides shelter, food, or school supplies for a child.

We warmly invite all partners, donors, and individuals of goodwill to support this project. Your contribution can turn tragedy into hope and help families start again.

9. Acknowledgments

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported or will support this initiative.

Your solidarity brings strength to families striving to recover. Thanks to you, hope is rising again where everything once seemed lost.

Together, let’s rebuild lives.
