By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader
Dear respected donors,
Thank you for supporting our goal to bring literacy training to 2,500 disabled women and girls in poor Hausa-speaking communities. Your contribution is deeply appreciated. Although we are not yet able to begin field activities, your support is helping us move closer to launching this important work.
Current Status
We have received our first donation. However, the amount raised so far is not yet enough to start the classrooms, recruit trained teachers, or procure the specialised learning tools needed for women with visual, hearing, or physical disabilities. The project requires a critical minimum level of funding before we can safely open learning centres and run sessions without interruption. Beginning early without adequate resources would affect the quality of training and put participants at risk of dropped classes.
Preparations Underway
Even though implementation has not started, we have completed the following groundwork:
• Mapped 14 communities in Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Bauchi where disabled women have no access to learning opportunities.
• Identified volunteer teachers who are willing to take part once funding allows.
• Prepared accessible literacy materials in Hausa and English, including large-print samples, audio lessons, and beginner-level sign-supported content.
• Secured commitments from community leaders to provide safe spaces for classes when the project launches.
These steps ensure that once enough funds are raised, we will begin teaching immediately without delay.
Why This Project Still Needs Support
More than 95% of disabled women in these communities have never been to school. Many cannot read a phone message, write their names, or understand basic health information. Without literacy, they remain excluded from work, services, and decisions that shape their daily lives. Each class will give them tools to communicate, stay safe, and build confidence.
Your continued support brings us closer to reaching 2,500 women and girls with free, adapted literacy classes designed for their specific needs. Every contribution helps us move toward the minimum funding required to start the first training cycle.
Next Steps
• Continue fundraising until we reach the threshold needed to start classes.
• Finalise lesson materials and volunteer schedules.
• Begin distributing literacy kits and opening the first centres once funds allow.
We are committed to keeping you informed as we progress. Thank you for standing with disabled women and young girls who have waited their entire lives for a chance to learn. Your support is the foundation on which this project will be built.
With respect,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic K.
