The early years in a child's life, from 0 to 5 years, are the most important time for supporting holistic development and preparing the child for a successful future. Pre-school learning and development builds the foundations for life-long learning, and yet 16% of preschool-age children in Kenya are out of school. The Turning Point's ECDE Centre offers an opportunity to 40 children from low-income households in Kibera every year to acquire Early Childhood Education for holistic growth.
Most children in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in Africa, do not start their education at the required age. This is majorly attributed to low-income levels in their families, whereby parents earn about $2 a day from casual jobs, forcing parents to prioritize educating elder siblings at the expense of the young ones. This locks them out from getting the much-needed foundational learning, sometimes ending up on the streets, and exposing themselves to social vices that exist in the slum.
The Turning Point's Kianda ECDE Center in Kibera Kenya provides free holistic early childhood education and foundational learning to 40 out-of-school children locked out of preschool by poverty. The foundational numeracy and literacy skills that children acquire at the Center prepare them to join primary school and catch up with their peers. Children's growth is also monitored regularly to ensure that they are not malnourished, which can affect their healthy growth in the future.
Through this programme, The Turning Point Trust aims to equip 40 children every year with foundational literacy and numeracy skills and reduce the number of children who do not attend school due to poverty levels in Kibera. Through the foundational knowledge that they acquire at the Centre, children will be prepared to join and complete primary school and eventually achieve their full potential, becoming agents of change in their community and breaking the cycle of poverty.
