Help 50 Nigerian Schools Combat Child Abuse

Introduction

This report details a recent initiative by Elite Star Foundation to address the pressing issue of child abuse and neglect among vulnerable children in Nigeria. On December 7th, 2023, our team visited an orphanage in Suleja, Niger State that houses Almajiri children. Almajiri children are those who have left their homes in search of an Islamic education but often end up neglected and living on the streets.

Visit to Suleja Orphanage

During our visit to the Suleja orphanage, we met approximately 97 Almajiri boys ranging from age 5 to 18. We observed that the children lacked proper adult supervision and care. Most were visibly malnourished and sick. They wandered the streets aimlessly begging for food. This neglect and lack of care constitutes a form of child abuse.

After consulting with the orphanage staff, we determined that the root causes of this neglect included:
- Lack of funding and resources at the orphanage
- Lack of staff and formal structures to care for the children
- Lack of awareness in the community about child abuse

Our Intervention

To immediately address the hunger and suffering, our team provided a hot meal for all 97 boys. This gave us an opportunity to gather them together and give an interactive talk about the dangers of child abuse and their rights to protection. We educated them not to accept exploitation or mistreatment.

Additionally, we committed to providing funding and volunteer resources to improve staffing and formal oversight structures at the orphanage. We will conduct awareness campaigns in the Suleja community about protecting vulnerable children.

Plan for Expansion

The distressing conditions witnessed at this single Suleja orphanage indicate that many more vulnerable Almajiri children likely suffer similar fates across Nigeria. We plan to scale our anti-child abuse efforts to help 50 Nigerian orphanages and schools in total. By providing funding, volunteer resources, mentorship programs, and community education campaigns, we aim to fundamentally improve child protection and nurturing.

Conclusion

Child abuse and neglect constitute human rights issues that destroy young lives and perpetuate generational cycles of poverty. By expanding our initiative across 50 Nigerian institutions, Elite Star Foundation hopes to make meaningful progress for the Almajiri and other at-risk youth. We believe every society prospers when children can grow up safe, happy and empowered to achieve their full human potential. There is still much work to be done, but this represents a strong start.
