School Feeding Transforms St. Bernard Mwenge Primary School
In just two years, St. Bernard Mwenge Primary School in Tororo District has witnessed a remarkable transformation — enrollment has jumped from 150 to over 500 pupils. What sparked this change? The introduction of a school feeding program. All thanks to supporters like you.
Prior to the program, attendance was irregular, and dropout rates were so high because children from 8:00 am to 4:00 Pm when they walk back home. Being a rural school just like in most parts of the country, feeding is not provided in schools, many children came from food-insecure households, making it hard for families to prioritize education over daily survival. With the introduction of a regular, nutritious school meal, everything changed.
Impact Highlights:
- Enrollment rose by over 230% in two years.
- Improved attendance: Fewer absences as students are motivated to attend daily.
- Better concentration and classroom performance due to improved nutrition.
- Community support increased, as parents saw the value of sending their children to school.
-For the first time in many years, the school is having over 15 Primary Leaving Examinations candidates as a minimum requirement by Uganda National Examinations Board to retain it's Centre number.
Headteacher of the school shared: "The feeding program didn’t just bring children to school — it gave them a reason to stay, learn, and dream big."
St. Bernard Mwenge's story is a powerful example of how one meal a day can create a ripple effect — lifting communities, improving education outcomes, and changing futures.
