The "Kinship Care" model covers educational as well as living expenses for children. Children in this program either have parents who cannot afford to care for them or who have been orphaned by the 2015 earthquake. NYF finds the child's nearest kin and provides support for the family to cover the child's education and upbringing.
The two major earthquakes in 2015 left displaced thousands of families and left many children homeless or without families who could support them.
Kinship Care helps keep families and communities intact by keeping children with their closest relatives and provides financial stability for the family.
Some of the children in this program will not need long-term support once their families are able to re-start businesses or farms devastated by the earthquakes. Others may need support up through high school. NYF has taken 800 children into this program following the earthquakes and will offer them security as long as they need it.
