Little “Usha” had suffered more than many of us do in a lifetime.
After her father passed away and her distraught mother disappeared, Usha had been living with their elderly grandmother. Sadly, even this new life they patched together was uprooted when their house was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.
With no safety net and the threat of trafficking and exploitation, Usha’s future looked bleak.
Fortunately, she was among the 743 children who started receiving NYF’s Earthquake Scholarship in 2016. With a monthly stipend from NYF, Usha is currently studying in fifth grade at a local school in her familiar village in Gorkha.
Thus far, 342 of the original 743 families have regained self-sufficiency thanks to the interim support they received. 401 families like Usha’s will continue to receive support until they are independent.
