Dear Friends,

Your support continues to bring hope to children affected by tuberculosis (TB) in Vietnam. Over the past several months, our focus has been on laying the groundwork for the next phase of this project, building strong partnerships, strengthening local health systems, and ensuring that every donation directly improves the lives of children and their families.

Project Overview

Vietnam remains among the world’s high-burden tuberculosis (TB) countries, and children are especially vulnerable. From May to December 2025, the project Help Children with TB in Vietnam supported early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of TB among children under 15, while strengthening the health system in two provinces, Bac Ninh and Vinh Long. The project was implemented by FIT RD in close coordination with the National Tuberculosis Program and provincial lung hospitals, with technical oversight from national authorities.

Challenge

Children with TB often face delayed diagnosis due to non-specific symptoms, limited diagnostic capacity at lower-level facilities, and barriers related to distance, cost, and caregiver awareness. These challenges are amplified in periods of administrative change and when health workers are overburdened or insufficiently trained in pediatric TB.

Solution and Activities

The project worked with 23 public and private health facilities to strengthen active case finding, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood TB. Key activities included:

  • Training health workers on national pediatric TB guidelines and data reporting tools.
  • Conducting active screening and chest X-rays for children with TB symptoms or risk factors.
  • Providing microbiological testing (Xpert) and structured clinical consultation for difficult cases.
  • Supporting data collection, monitoring, and regular supervision through a centralized digital system.
  • Coordinating closely with provincial hospitals to ensure timely treatment initiation and follow-up.

Results

From August to December 2025:

  • 4,857 children were screened and received chest X-rays (97% of target).
  • 228 children received Xpert tests (106% of target).
  • 9 children were diagnosed with TB and 100% were linked to treatment.
  • Active clinical consultation significantly improved detection of clinically diagnosed pediatric TB.

Screening for latent TB infection was limited due to a national shortage of tuberculin, a challenge beyond the project’s control.

Impact

The project demonstrated that coordinated, guideline-based active screening can effectively identify and treat children with TB, even under time and system constraints. It strengthened local capacity, improved collaboration between health facilities, and contributed to better access to timely, life-saving TB care for vulnerable children.

Looking Ahead

Findings from this project are informing ongoing research and policy discussions to further improve pediatric TB detection and care in Vietnam. Continued support will help expand these successful approaches and ensure more children can grow up healthy, educated, and TB-free.

Together, we are proving that timely care, coordinated systems, and community commitment can change the course of a child’s life. Thank you for standing with us in the fight against TB.
