Every year, our school conducts religion celebration events, different workshops to the community, students and staff in order to develop and improve capacity, knowledge, skills and sharing experiences among our stakeholders. These events and activities are Khmer New Year, and Handwashing. These activities benefit and influent to our students themselves. So, pleased read more how the events arranged, conducted and influenced to our people in the community where we work with.
Khmer New Year Celebration
Every year, we organize and celebrate Khmer New Year Party and in the party celebration, we have conducted lots of games, activities and challenges. For example, this year we had Khmer traditional games, lucky draw and dance, songs competition, and show performance competition.
How we do it?
We set up committees and each committee managed and leaded their team members who play games, who sing the songs, who conduct the show.
First, after announcing to the schedule and committees, we played Khmer traditional games. For example, Throw the scarf, Heat Pot, Eat Water Melon…etc. After traditional games played, we ended the games stages, then we invited students who are candidates to join the competition for sing the songs, and show performance competition to prepare themselves.
Secondly, we asked singers competition first and there are a few singers joined. After song competition group finished, we continued with the show performance group.
Finally, the committees give score for both groups, song and show group. As the result, each group has winners and we offer the gifts to the winners. Everyone was really happy and cheerful. In additional, we learnt that our students know how to prepare themselves, take responsibility, creatives and explore their talents before the show. It is unbelievable that we never know they can sing songs, and they can lead their team member, communicate and collaborate each other to perform the show very well.
Sihak, one of our students expresses his feeling about Khmer New Year Party and the show he did during the party. “Hello, my name is Sihak. I am 11 years old. I am a student studying at Salariin Kampuchea school. I want to tell you all about my feeling when I participated in playing the show called Tom Teav as comedy show. When I started to learn about the show at first time, I feel very nervous a little bit but I still tried to learn, practice, show with my body gesture with my friends better. I also discussed with my team strictly in order to avoid any mistakes. I want to tell you that before I cannot do a show even if my gestures and words but when I started to learn and join in a show team, I know how to show some dramas or a comedy with my proper body language or gestures. For example, I can perform a show called Tom Teav, one of Khmer literature story on the stage during the show performance competition for Khmer New Year party. I feel nervous and excited, however, I committed myself. Finally, I can do it with my team very well and I got awards for my show and talent. Thanks my, school, teacher and friends that work together and for good cooperation till we win the show”.
Handwashing
In order to improve basic hygiene of our small kids, our teachers have conducted handwashing for our students for the last few months.
Our teachers taught them in class how we wash hands, when we have to wash hands and why we wash our hands. This topic was integrated into our school curriculum for children.
After the lesson, our students were assessed how they realize and understand the topic. In addition, we asked our students to practice at school after their classes outside.
As the result, students are aware of handwashing after they leave the toilet and before eating. They really enjoy the handwashing activities when they apply it as you can see in the pictures.
In the next three months, we will make floor tiles for 5 classrooms, decorate fence and arrange parent meeting for a community assessment to find impacts we have done so far.
We would like to thanks everyone who supported us through GlobalGiving with your hard-earning money. Width your help we hope to continue and build upon the success of our non-formal education program.
We wish you happy New Year, every success, happiness and enjoy it with your family and friends!
Warmest regards,
The Salariin Kampuchea Team
