Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center is providing non-formal education program through foreign languages (English, Chinese) and IT. In order to improve our teaching and learning process for our kids, we set up and organize different competitions. Please see our activities with our students and teachers as follows.
Spelling Bee competition
In the last three months, in October our school arranged the Spelling Bee Competition among its students. It lasted for one month and a half to the end. It comes across from different classes and different rounds in their classrooms. Students are eliminated by their classroom teachers from different rounds in their classroom before they jump to the final competition.
In the final spelling competition, there were more than 60 students selected. During the final spelling competition, a committee was set up for their different roles, for example timer, reader and listener for the spelling. The student group come one by one to spell their words. Each student has three minutes to spell it to end. Finally, there were 9 students awarded for the Champion Spellers, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each group (group 300, 700 and group 1200 English words). All participants get certificates. For those who become champion spellers get certificates, awards and study materials. They really enjoy it very much. It is great to inspire them to study hard.
One student, Panha expressed his feeling to join the final champion spelling competition and he is the champion in the 1st place for 1200 English words. “I am really exciting to the competition. I am proud of myself. I really study hard and always keep spelling words when I am free from my study. This event is great to motivate me for overcoming the competition.
Speaking English Contest
This is the first year for our school to arrange the English speaking contest. We can see that our students motivated to participate in our program and they worked hard to improve their English-speaking skills.
Before the contest, we announced to our students who are interesting to join the English-Speaking Contest. Then teachers provide them topic so they can choose the topic by themselves. Students are also trained and coached them how to present their topic. They practice their speaking in their own classroom with their teachers and classmates.
During the English-speaking contest, the committee as examiners lead the contest process. They invite students to present their topic one by one. The committee give score to presenter according to their levels and criteria. Students are divided different levels. Lower level of English class students is offered to speak first. Then higher-level students start next. The students have 3 minutes to present their topic and include questions from the committee.
The students get good experience and gain skills. They are highly motivated to talk and present their topic professionally. The students learn the key points in the presentation as following.
1. Greeting words
2. Self -introduction
3. Introduction to topics
4. Attraction and explanation to the topic in details
5. leaving the messages and thanks audiences
6. Closing their topic and say goodbye.
It is a fruitful and inspiring event for student’s learning and empowerment to achieve student’s outcome and our program objectives improving student’s speaking skills and learning.
For example, our student, Srey Net, winer for the speaking award expresses her feeling about English Speaking Test. “I am so very exciting to join the speaking contest. Actually, it is motivated to learn hard. Every day I practice my topic at home alone and at school with my friends. I try to speak English with people around me. Finally, my dream becomes true. I won the speaking champion. I would like to thank my parents, teachers and friends who always support me”.
Our consultative office has been built according to the plan. We have more space to advice and consult students who have personal and family problems.
In the next three months, we are going to build flag poles and set up a playground for kids. We are going to celebrate Christmas Day and New Year 2024. We are going to conduct the speaking contest in the beginning of 2024.
We would like to thanks everyone, friends, partners who have supported us so far through GlobalGiving with your hard-earning money. Width your help we hope to continue and build upon the success of our non-formal education program.
