Facilities Enhance the Learning Environment

Salariin Kampuchea continues to improve the learning environment for children in Siem Reap, Cambodia through various activities and projects. Over the past three months, we have seen positive changes in both infrastructure and the overall learning atmosphere at our center.

Toothbrushing Project Raises Awareness About Oral Hygiene

At the beginning of 2025, we organized and launched a toothbrushing project for the children at our learning center. More than 200 students participated in the workshop. They learned about good and bad foods for their teeth through a slideshow presentation on a large LCD screen.

Our dedicated volunteers, Lydia and Isaak, performed a fun and educational skit about the importance of brushing teeth and the problems caused by poor dental hygiene, like toothaches. They also demonstrated the correct way to brush teeth. On another day, students were divided into groups to practice toothbrushing at school. Each child received one toothbrush and one tube of toothpaste to take home for daily use.

For example, Boramey, a student in our General English Program, shared:

“I am happy to brush my teeth with my friends at school. I got one toothbrush and one toothpaste to take home. I will use them with my family. I love keeping my teeth healthy. I now know how to brush my teeth — up-down and left-right.”

Khmer New Year Celebration Fosters Joy and Community Spirit

Every April, our school celebrates the Khmer New Year to bring together students, teachers, and staff, and to honor Cambodian traditions. The event features a variety of traditional Khmer games and activities. We also share a community meal and present awards to students with excellent attendance or top rankings in their classes.

One of our students, Ponleu, shared his thoughts on the celebration:

“Hello everyone, my name is Ponleu. I was very excited to join the Khmer New Year Celebration. I played many traditional games like throw the scarf, hit the pot, sack race, catch the leaf, and pop the balloon. I was especially happy about the lucky draw, where students could win school supplies like books, pens, rulers, and more. I won study materials and enjoyed a lunch box with my friends and teachers. After lunch, we danced to Khmer songs together. Thank you to the school for organizing this event!”

New Handwashing Station Promotes Hygiene and Healthy Habits

Thanks to the support of our volunteers, a new handwashing station was installed at the school to promote better hygiene among students. This facility helps children develop healthy habits, such as washing their hands regularly with soap.

Teachers guided students through handwashing routines for the first few weeks. The children learned to wash their hands and fingers properly, especially after using the toilet, playing with shared items, and before eating.

Votey, a student in our Phonics Level 3 class, said:

“I am so happy about the new handwashing station. Before, it leaked and made me wet when I washed my hands. Now, it's easy to use, and the water doesn’t spill. There is a place for soap, and the tap works well. I’m really happy with this improvement.”

Cooling Fans Reduce Heat

From April to May, the temperature is increasing, so we bought five cooling fans for students for five classrooms. Students can learn better during the heat season. They are very happy with the cooling fan.

Looking Ahead

In the coming three months, we plan to:

  • Repair roads connecting the community to the school
  • Host a parent meeting
  • Organize a Spelling Bee competition
  • Celebrate Pchum Ben (Ancestor’s Day) with children and staff

We would like to sincerely thank all our friends and partners who have supported us through GlobalGiving. Your hard-earned contributions make a real difference. With your continued support, we look forward to expanding the impact of our non-formal education programs.

Wishing you success, happiness, and joyful moments with your loved ones!

Warmest regards,
The Salariin Kampuchea Team
