Our goals are to empower young people to respond to job market and enhance education. To achieve these, we provide extra curriculums to support disadvantaged students in Siem Reap through English program, basic computer skills, work experience, community library, life skill, scholarship program and partnership with public schools to keep retention and attendance and hotels for work experience and job arrangement.
English graduation
For the last three months, our English program has finished for the course books and conducted certificate test for Let’s Go 3 and New Headway Elementary. The students graduated their course books successfully. 34 of 39 students passed the Let’s Go 3 and 15 of 15 students passed New Headway Elementary. They will receive certificate for their graduation. We really appreciate for all their success and work hard.
One student, Sopha, expressed her feeling about English certificate test with Salariin Kampuchea (SK):” My name is Sopha. I am 19 years old. I am a student in grade 12 at Angkor High school. I live in Veal village, Chreav commune Siem Reap district and province, Cambodia. In my free time, I like reading book or story books, doing homework, and house work. In the future, I want to work in a company because I want to help my family and get high salary. I have just finished my English course book “New Headway Elementary” at Salariin Kampuchea. It is my success and it is the first time that I need to study a lot and hard as I am curious about my future. As the result, I passed the certificate test successfully and received a certificate. Finally, I want to tell children, brother or sister about the study because the word study means that it is not easy but we must study hard”.
Angkor Wat Bike4Kids
In December, 30 young students participate the great social event for Angkor Wat Bike4Kids. The students like it very much as they have never seen and joined such a big event. They learn how to communicate with different people in the event, they learnt how big event arranged and they are able to improve and test their cycling adventure.
One student, Sreyhan, expressed her feeling about experience in Angkor Wat Bike4Kids:” In December, I went bike racing and ridding at Angkor Wat temple. There were a lot of people enjoyed it. We spent nearly 3 hours to arrive at the finished point. Our teachers gave us the breakfast that’s really wonderful. We started racing at 6:15 am and I arrived at the finished point at 10:00. After we arrived at the point, we were offered some drink, juice, water and cookies. After we had lunch together in front of Angkor Wat temple. I was too tired, however I was very happy to this event as I saw and met lots of foreign people cycling. It was a lovely day for me and everyone. Next time, I wish I would join this event again”
Work Experience
In December, 23 of young people get work experience at Pacific hotel (www.pacifichotel.com.kh) as waiters, waitresses and cook assistance. This is the first step forward for their future career and employment. They gain work knowledge and work experience in the hotel industry. They are very thrilled to work. Furthermore, they improve their English communication with guests, adapt themselves to the work environment. They really enjoy this opportunity that enable them to work for the future job.
Two other students, Rosa and Sreyleak, expressed their feeling about work experience at Pacific Hotel: “We would like to thank you so much for the two last months that Salariin Kampuchea chose us for the work experience at Pacific Hotel. We really pleased to the internship there. The first when we arrived at the hotel, we felt surprised because it was a beautiful hotel. When we arrived, the staff of the Pacific Hotel greeted and guided us how to work as service and cook assistance. It seemed the work was hard as it was the first time for us to work in the hotel but later we feel ok. A few days later, we felt we work very fast and confident. We know some names of equipment in the hotel. We felt very happy to work there because the staff are friendly and supportive. As the result, now we gain knowledge and work experience even though it was a short time work. We hope next time, we are allowed to work their again”.
In the next three months, we will conduct certificate tests for English classes and life skill, arrange final trip for life skill students, recruit new life skill students, decorate classrooms, and celebrate Khmer New Year. In the library, we conduct movie show for all children who attend in SK’s programs. Finally, our football teams will join the final league.
We would like to thank everyone who supported us through GlobalGiving. With your help we hope to continue and build upon the success of our non-formal education program.
Warmest regards,
The Salariin Kampuchea Team
