Stud Horse Riding and Rescue provides a permanent home for rescued and retired ponies. There are 23 ponies living onsite. Only 7 are suitable for riding. The rest are retired, injured or too small to ride. This project is to raise funds to purchase the necessary horse feed, medication and water that the horses need to survive. This project also supports the working ponies on the island, but providing them with a place to seek medical care and assistance for their ponies.
Over the last 4 years, Gili Trawangan has suffered with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and the pandemic. The income of the island residents has suffered resulting in a decline in horse welfare. Stud provides a forever home to many retired ponies as well as a safe place for drivers to bring working ponies if they have an injury or problem on an island that has a lack of veterinary or professional farrier care.
This project will continue to support the rescued and retired horses living at Stud . It will also provide feed and medical aid for many other cart ponies on the island. By providing grass, feed, water and any required medication, we hope to keep as many of the island horses as happy and healthy as possible.
In the longer term, this project will continue to improve our relationships with horse owners on the island. Building trust and rapport with them will allow us to continue to educate them about better horse care and improve the living conditions of many horses that remain on the island. For over 15 years we have held horse clinics with international vets and farriers which we plan to continue in the future, so maintaining a good bond with horse owners is key.
