While most of life at Stud falls into a general daily routine, we are constantly dealing with injuries, illness and the issues that life with horses throws at us on a daily basis.
Minnie, the new horse we purchased from Gili Meno in February is thriving! She had a few months of resting and eating in the paddock, before we started gently riding her in May. She loves going to the beach, and is always very excited and curious. Her history as a horse cart pony has made her extremely resilient and bomb proof. Nothing phases her, and we think she will make a fantastic asset to the team.
Of course life with horses doesn’t come without heart break. We lost beautiful Dennis in April. While we will never know exactly what the issue was, we felt more equipped to deal with his short illness, giving him pain medication, sedation and fluids. Dennis was a faithful horse cart pony who was in our care for over 10 years. He suffered terribly from allergies which meant that we spend lots of time with Dennis dealing with his various skin issues. He will be sadly missed.
On a positive note, we have helped set up a supply chain to be able to sell good quality horse shoes and nails in their shop. This means quality shoes are now available for everyone. We have provided them with several sets of tools to apply the shoes correctly, and training in correct trimming techniques. While this will be an ongoing project, we are delighted with the positive responses we have had so far. We hope to continue working together with the Koperasi to help improve the working conditions of the ponies on the island.
We were also delighted to host vet students from the University in Mataram, who received training in various areas of equine medicine including dentals. All of our ponies were happy to lend their chompers to the cause. The students received training in basic dental floating as well as extraction of wolf teeth, as well as dealing with one case of wave mouth.
Moving forward, we will continue to provide a happy and safe forever home for 22 ponies on Gili Trawangan. We look forward to welcoming vet students from Lombok in order to continue their training. We will be on hand to provide training for local farriers who wish to upskill and improve their techniques, as well as providing them with imported equipment with which to be able to perform the job well.
We would love to have a drive towards getting more horses vaccinated against tetanus. We have seen several devastating cases of this on the island. The vaccines are not cheap, but many of the horses are exposed to several threats that could lead to infection.
Once again, we wish to send out gratitude to our generous and continued supporters. Our project is small but making a mighty difference to the lives of many horses on Gili Trawangan.
