Stud Horse Riding and Rescue provides a permanent home for 25 ponies, with only 8 suitable for riding. The rest are retired, injured, or too small to ride. This project seeks funds for essential feed, medication, and water for the ponies. It also supports working ponies on the island by offering medical care and assistance, as well as providing farrier training for local horse owners to improve animal welfare.
Gili Trawangan has faced numerous challenges over the years, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and the pandemic. During these difficult times, many horses were sold for meat, and the lack of income led to a decline in horse welfare. In response, Stud Horse Riding and Rescue rescued 16 horses at risk of being sold for meat and, over the past 3 years, has provided a forever home for 9 more. We also aim to provide education to other horse owners to improve the welfare of their animals.
This project will continue to support the rescued and retired horses at Stud Horse Riding and Rescue, ensuring they receive proper care, feed, and medical aid. By offering this support, we aim to keep as many horses as healthy and happy as possible. Furthermore, Stud serves as a positive example of animal welfare and provides valuable education to local horse owners on proper care and treatment, promoting better practices across the island.
In the long term, this project will strengthen relationships with horse owners on the island, building trust to improve horse care and living conditions. For over 15 years, we've hosted horse clinics with international vets and farriers, and we plan to continue these in the future. Maintaining strong bonds with horse owners is crucial to ensuring the success and sustainability of our education efforts and improving the welfare of the horses on the island.
