Summary

This project will build a shoreline shelter, stairs with railings, and a dock for the 195 people of Wainidova, a tiny village located on the bank of the formidable Navua River (Fiji's longest), allowing them to access food, education, and healthcare in a safe way. COVID-19 hit Fiji's tourism hard- the largest export, and it has exacerbated the poverty in the village. The villagers have the choice to decide between using money to update the decaying river transport OR to feed their families.

Challenge

Currently, there is no shelter to protect passengers from the harsh rain or the scorching sun, the stairs that lead down to the loading area are broken with steep and missing steps AND no railings. Strong currents are a problem since the boat does not have a motor. There is no dock so it is very dangerous when people are getting on and off the boat, especially because the boat is very slippery. Drowning has become an issue because there are also not enough life vests.

Solution

We will build a proper shelter with benches for people to wait out of the sun & rain. A wooden cabin boat with an engine for proper transportation of people will be purchased. The stairs will be fixed and railings added. We will also build a dock so the boat can pull up and everyone can board and disembark safely. This project enables safe transportation for everyone, especially the most vulnerable (women, children, and the elderly) to be able to participate in the Fijian way of life!

Long-Term Impact

Economic empowerment! The minimum wage in Fiji is $2.68 FJD equivalent to $1.34 USD on average a Fijian makes $60 USD a week. Which is used to feed their family and continue living. This project will set a benchmark for those under the poverty line, enabling villagers to focus on their families rather than this project that would remove food from their table. By helping everyone have access to schools, medical facilities, the urban center, and markets we leave no one behind!
