The continuous heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flash floods blocking roads, washing away bridges and killing at least 52 people in Nepal. At least 250 households were submerged and 6 families relocated in the Saptari district alone, where we are currently working to provide education for girls. This project aims to provide short-term emergency supplies and support the victims to rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
The immediate challenges are food, sanitation and shelter for families badly affected by the flooding. Then, the next challenge will be to repair the damage and put them back on their feet. The majority of people badly affected by the floods are the poorest ones because they live in thatched muddy houses. The livelihoods of the poorest families in the villages rely on small-scale farming and the flood has wiped out their crops and leaving them with nothing.
As an emergency relief, this project will provide food, sanitation and temporary shelter to families badly affected by the floods in the villages of Saptari district. In the long term, the project will help the families to get them back in their home by repairing it and, on their feet by re-generating their livelihoods. Nepal Village Foundation has been working in villages of Nepal since 2009 on various projects and we have a capable team in Nepal who can deliver the project effectively.
The potential long-term impact will be putting the families back on their feet as quickly as possible. Without the support, it will take years for those families to repair their homes and rebuild their livelihoods.
