Nyalenda community sits in Kisumu county which is one of the 47 counties within Kenya. Nyalenda has a population of around 100,000 people who lives in the slums and who lives below a dollar a day. Due to heavy rains this year most houses have been marooned in flood waters. The area has been experiencing perennial flooding and people have been displaced each and every year. The women and children and elderly living in the slums have been displaced hence needs urgent interventions.
There are currently 500 households who have been displaced by water under the effects of flooding. They lack proper shelter and food, their children are also affected as their household properties destroyed. some of them have lost their farm produce as Rain has washed all their plants. There is has been rise in spread of water borne diseases like cholera,Malaria and Typhoid. Some of them are faced with lack of shelter as they have moved out of their houses due to floods.
JWF will be able to evacuate the affected people to higher ground where food will be provided . JWF will be able to provide mosquito nets, blankets and clothes and not forgetting medical services to the people. This will solve the issue of children accessing schools without any challenge. sleeping under the mosquito nets will solve the problem of families being attacked by mosquitoes hence reduce Malaria.
Feeding over 1000 families during this difficult time and providing medical services to them will bring hope to make them a healthy families that can strive to fend for their daily activities. The beneficiaries will be able to have their children back to school and diseases that as a result of flooding will be minimized. This will touch so many lives .Strong and healthy families will be strong enough to continue with their day to day activities.
