Sexual abuse of girls is a highly prevalent but hidden issue in Nepal - rape is the first sexual experience for one in three girls. Many victims feel unable to report abuse for fear of being punished or shamed, which allows perpetrators to continue to abuse them and others. For victims, a lack of specialised and approachable support services means they do not seek help for their recovery and the impact of abuse continues to affect them for the rest of their life.
An emergency shelter which provides protection for girl victims of sexual abuse or exploitation. Within the shelter girls have access to education, counselling, medical treatment and legal support. Experienced staff not only understand the fears and challenges that these girls face, but also have the skills to help them recover. Each girl is supported on their individual journey to recover and ultimately rebuild their life either back with their family or independently.
Each year the project directly helps 50 girls, of whom more than 90% are successfully reintegrated with their families, supported to start living independently or in the case of younger girls (for whom there are no other options) referred to longer-term residential support. By providing a place of safety, this project enables local government and human rights organisations to take legal action against perpetrators of abuse therefore preventing abuse of hundreds of girls in the future.
