Education in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo lags significantly for many reasons. Indigenous communities are disproportionately poorer than non-indigenous communities; most families lack critical resources, and many children complete education through 6th grade before leaving to earn necessary income. This project aims to overcome the educational lag and keep children interested in learning through integrated learning programs that include tutoring, arts, literacy, sports, and mentoring.
In the community of San Miguel Viejo, the education system faces significant challenges that impact the future of its children. Indigenous families, who are often disproportionately affected by poverty, struggle to access essential resources that would support their children's education. As a result, many children complete their schooling by the 6th grade and leave to contribute to the family's income, sacrificing their educational development for immediate financial needs.
For more than 12 years, Ojala Ninos has been a pillar of support for the community of San Miguel Viejo, providing a thriving after-school program that serves more than 100 children. This engaging program utilizes a holistic and interactive approach to learning, incorporating essential disciplines such as Science, Technology, Arts, Math and Reading Enhancement. With these activities and nurturing these competencies, we empower children to become well-rounded individuals.
This program aims to equip children with essential life skills for their future roles in the economy. It includes hands-on gardening to teach sustainable practices and comprehensive lessons in computer literacy for relevant digital skills. Math and English are also key components, fostering critical thinking and communication. Regular reading sessions promote imagination and creativity. Overall, the program supports personal growth and contributes positively to the community.
