Southeast Madagascar has just experienced its driest October to December on record. The rains have failed to arrive, and unseasonable strong winds are making life even harder. In the last three months, 3cm of rain has fallen, compared to 21cm during the same period last year. Without rain, crops are failing, water sources are drying up, and families are struggling to afford food as prices rise. These challenges although immediate, also threaten long-term health, livelihoods, and resililience.
The current conditions are reminiscent of the devastating drought of 2021, which left over 1.3 million people in need of emergency support. Once again, communities are bracing for the long-term impacts-widespread hunger, malnutrition, and lost livelihoods.
The programme focuses on: 1.Preventing and treating malnutrition, especially for children under five, pregnant women, and mothers. 2.Strengthening health systems by training local health workers to better identify and treat malnutrition. 3.Building resilience through sustainable solutions like improved water access. 4.Adapting livelihoods to offer sustainable employment and business opportunities, supporting local people with skills that can be passed on to future generations.
The people of southeast Madagascar are resilient, but these worsening conditions call for urgent action. Your support can help save lives, protect families, and ensure communities are stronger in the face of future challenges. Donate today to make a difference.
