Project Report | Feb 13, 2018
Obesity and diabetes prevention with children

By Jocelyn Brambila | Project Leader

Dear GlobalGivers,

As part of our efforts of reducing risks for children in vulnerable communities, we have started efforts to improve nutrition, prevent obesity and diabetes with elementary school children. Mexico holds the first place in childhood obesity worldwide. In the State of Chihuahua in particular, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are the top causes for death.

We believe in the importance of prevention, therefore, we are currently working with elementary level teachers, students and parents to reduce the risks of non transmissible diseases related to obesity, improving nutrition and promoting healthy habits.  Through our life skills framework, our Yo quiero Yo puedo team is training teachers and students, and also, involving parents in the process for a comprehensive approach in the cities of Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua.

During the first school year we have successfully trained: 360 teachers, 10,800 students and 900 parents in a total of 190 elementary schools. A total of 5 community events took place to sensitize people about diabetes prevention, promote exercise and healthy habits and improve childhood nutrition.

So far, we have had an amazing experience working in these schools, we have included a few testimonies from participating teachers:

“Overall, I have left behind the idea that a life of healthy habits is hard to follow.”

Teacher, 50 years old

“Personal motivation and self awareness in order to understand that if I want to, I can improve my life in every sense.”

Teacher, 43 years old

“I’m very grateful, I’m taking with me a lot of ideas and techniques to approach this subject and others in a fun and easy way.”

Teacher, 27 years old

Our team is continuing their work throughout this 2018-2019 school year, so you can expect more about this project in the future.

Thank you again for your ongoing support!
