GETTING STARTED - MEASURING SUCCESS IN 2017

By Jennifer Glansford | National Development Manager

GETTING STARTED PROGRAMME - MEASURING SUCCESS IN 2017

The Getting Started Programme at Age Action was very successful during 2017 with our one

to one computer classes for older people going from strength to strength.

The programme aims to deliver step by step training in a supported, encouraging and relaxed environment in local venues, with local volunteers to local people. The true essence of community development!

During 2017, we delivered training in:

91 separate venues including:

  • 23 Local Libraries

  • 14 Corporate Organisations

  • 21 Schools & Colleges

  • 12 Sheltered Housing Complexes

  • 15 Community Centres

  • 4 Age Action Offices/Training Spaces

We had 508 other contacts with people attending our Drop In Services in Dublin and Galway, Information Talks, Workshops, Extra Training and Technical Support appointments.

We trained 2,526 people who availed of 10 hours of one to one training and a further 328 were trained by our community partners who include IRD Duhallow, Shannon Family Resource Centre, 121 Digital and MAWork4All.

Classes were provided in 13 counties including Carlow, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Monaghan, Waterford and Wicklow.

Our plans for 2018 are to train over 4,000 people and to extend our classes to Laois, Offaly, Tipperary, Wexford and run classes in more venues in Waterford, Wicklow and Kilkenny.

We are supported by the Digital Skills for Citizens Fund under the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and while we are delighted to be grantees of this fund, extra funding allows us to extend our services especially to restart our Getting Started @ Home Project which would allow trained, vetted tutors teach house bound learners in their own homes. It also allows us to offer extended support services such as more Drop In Centres, Technical Support services, further training and information sessions.

The volunteers who support the Getting Started Programme are without doubt the backbone of the service and are the biggest resource. Without their commitment, time, fun and friendship, we could not continue offering one to one training – the piece that makes the difference for older people who have taken the leap to engage in the digital world. Extra funding allows us to support our volunteers.

Thanks to all!

Jennifer & The Team.
