Many women in rural Nigeria struggle to support their children due to lack of income. Some are widows, divorced, or their husbands are unemployed. This project will help 1,500 women start small POS (Point of Sale) or agricultural businesses. POS agents help people withdraw or send money using mobile devices and earn a fee per transaction. Each woman will get a startup kit, savings card, and training to build a small but steady income.
Many women in rural Nigeria are unable to care for their children due to lack of income. Widows are often left with nothing after a husband's death. Some are abandoned or divorced and must feed and educate their children alone. Without a way to earn, they depend on others who may not help. Their children suffer from poor feeding, missed school, and lack of medical care.
The project will train 1,500 women to start a POS or small farm business. In Nigeria, POS agents earn income by charging a small fee for cash deposits, withdrawals, and bill payments. Each woman will receive a starter kit, a savings card, and training on how to save and grow income. The savings card helps them track daily or weekly contributions and manage their business better.
The businesses will help women earn and take care of their children without begging or waiting for help. With the savings cards, they can track their money and plan ahead. Some will save enough to expand or join a group contribution plan. Their children will be able to eat well, stay in school, and get health care. The skills learned will continue to help long after the project ends.
