SAVE LIFE MAKE DIFFERENCE Bujumbura Burundi savelifemakedifference@gmail.com Project report EMERGENCY APPEAL In response to the current humanitarian crisis in Burundi, which escalated significantly in late 2025 and early 2026, multiple international organizations and the Burundian government have issued urgent emergency appeals to address mass displacement and overlapping health crises. Current Emergency Situation (2025–2026) The primary driver of the current emergency is a massive influx of refugees fleeing violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) , coupled with internal displacement due to climate disasters. State of Emergency: On December 17, 2025, the Government of Burundi officially declared a state of emergency due to the scale and severity of the refugee crisis. Mass Displacement: Over 88,000 refugees arrived in Burundi within a few weeks in late 2025, with thousands crossing the Rusizi River in critical condition. Overlapping Crises: The country is simultaneously grappling with the aftermath of devastating El Niño floods (2023–2024) and outbreaks of Mpox, cholera, and measles. Active Humanitarian Appeals Several major appeals are currently active to provide life-saving assistance: Burundian Government Plan: Seeking $33.2 million to manage the influx of nearly 90,000 new arrivals. UNHCR Regional Appeal: Requesting $47.2 million for the period December 2025 – March 2026 to support displaced persons in the DRC and refugees arriving in Burundi and Rwanda. UNICEF 2026 Appeal: The UNICEF Humanitarian Action for Children identifies 2.5 million people in the Great Lakes region, including Burundi, who will require urgent assistance in 2026. IOM Crisis Response Plan: The International Organization for Migration is implementing a multi-year strategy (2024–2026) to address internal displacement and public health challenges. Humanitarian actors are prioritizing the following areas of response: Shelter & Protection: Establishing new refugee sites (e.g., in Ruyigi) as existing transit centers have reached capacity. Health & Nutrition: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Burundi Red Cross are providing emergency medical care, mental health support, and hot meals at border entry points. Providing clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene kits to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Burundi is one of the smaller African states and, despite its bloody conflicts, humanitarian crisis and extreme poverty, is hardly noticed by world society. Similar to neighbouring Rwanda, the situation in the country is characterised by fighting between Hutu and Tutsi, which is accompanied by a form of leadership that is now dictatorship-like. Many people in the country suffer from malnutrition. Outside help is hardly possible.

You can help Burundi's poor population through various project-based donations, supporting NGOs that provide humanitarian aid, and raising awareness about the country's challenges. Specific projects focus on immediate needs like food and water, while others aim for sustainable solutions such as building schools, supporting small businesses, improving healthcare access, or assisting people with disabilities. Supporting organizations like UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and GlobalGiving are effective ways to contribute.

Direct project support

Donate to specific needs: Many projects accept donations for direct impact, such as providing food and clean water ($10), nutritious meals ($30), or school fees ($250).

Fund sustainable initiatives: Contributions can support long-term solutions like a cow for a small dairy business ($300), building a health center ($500), or constructing houses ($3,000).

Support for specific groups: Projects also focus on vulnerable populations, such as people with disabilities who face difficulties finding food.

Share information: Spread the word about the humanitarian and economic crises in Burundi. Raising public awareness can encourage more support and action.
