The Municipality F of Montevideo struggles with high rates of violence and poverty. We want to make the area a better place for Uruguayan kids to grow up. By equipping staff from local organizations in violence prevention techniques we will strengthen kids, families and the community in the face of violence, maltreatment, sexual abuse and exploitation. Montevideo Municipality F has one of the highest rates of child poverty (60% of kids under age 14), school drop out (37%), child labor (31%) and child sexual exploitation in the city. On a national level, 84% of Uruguayan children have suffered situations of violence or maltreatment, (54% moderate, 13.6% severe). 7 in 10 cases of severe violence leave children with irreversible physical consequences. Parents have few resources to protect children and promote healthy development.
We want to make the area a better place for Uruguayan kids to grow up by equipping staff from local organizations in violence prevention techniques. Through didactic play, group activities, and public awareness campaigns, we will bring attention to the issue. We will offer children, parents and mentors practical tools for violence prevention and healthy development. Two Latin American volunteers will support the project by accompanying local staff, kids and families throughout the process.
This project will help to strengthen kids, teens, families and the community in the face of violence, maltreatment, sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation. In similar projects, we have seen an increase in the number of cases reported and prosecuted. The efforts promote fair and caring treatment in schools, community organizations, public spaces and homes so that all children can enjoy a life free of violence.
